Survey of historic gardens in Transylvania continues

Work continued at six sites to scientifically map Transylvanian historic and heritage gardens. The fieldwork of landscape architecture students on Transylvanian castle gardens was partly supported by the Hungarian Garden Heritage Foundation.

From 11th to 14th of May 2022, the Department of Garden Art and Landscape Design of the Institute of Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning and Garden Art, Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences continued to document the current situation of castle gardens in Transylvania in the framework of another field trip. During the fieldwork, a research team of 10 teachers and students carried out a field inventory of six gardens. This time, the Wesselényi Castle Garden in Zsibó, the Haller-Jósika Castle Garden in Csákigorbó, the Jósika Castle Garden in Szurdok, the Ádám Wass and Jenő Wass Castle Garden in Cege were the subject of a heritage survey. At the same time, the team continued the plant survey of the Rákóczi-Bornemisza Castle Garden in Görgényszentimre and the Barcsay Castle Garden in Gyalu, completing the existing data concerning the special dendrological specimens. These two latter castle gardens are designated as restoration design sites in the autumn study programme of master’s students in landscape architecture in Budapest.
