Ornamental kitchen gardens – International conference organised by the Hungarian Garden Heritage Foundation

The Hungarian Garden Heritage Foundation organises an international conference entitled Ornamental kitchen gardens – The past and future of the garden heritage of castles, palaces, manor houses and religious centres in Buda Castle. The event, which will take place from 21 to 23 April, will feature presentations and discussions for professionals, as well as activities for the general public interested in garden heritage.

Regarding historic gardens and other gardens of historical interest, the conservation, renovation and maintenance of ornamental kitchen gardens and the use of their products is getting more attention worldwide. In addition to a boost of garden tourism, the community-building and conservation role of ornamental and castle gardens, through the involvement of local residents and volunteers, is also playing a role in this. The aim of the international conference, organised by the Hungarian Garden Heritage Foundation and the Buda Várkapitányság, in cooperation with the Hungarian Association of Landscape Architects and the Institute of Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning and Ornamental Horticulture of the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, is to provide an overview of the research and design dilemmas of castle and palace gardens in large cities and historic centres, the topics of their maintenance and operation, the education and volunteering, the gardener’s career model, and the latest trends in the themes and practices of garden programmes and ecological sustainability. A joint memorandum on sustainable garden heritage is also planned.

The professional programmes are conducted with simultaneous English-Hungarian interpretation.
